We are constantly told that Artificial Intelligence is the most groundbreaking development in human history, but is it really? In this thought-provoking talk, Salih Orgun challenges the current 'hype' surrounding AI. By tracing the concept back to 20th-century literature and cinema, he questions a fundamental premise: Can true intelligence exist without consciousness? Drawing parallels to the Y2K panic and comparing AI to humanity's earliest and most vital inventions—like a simple steel blade—Orgun reminds us that AI is not a magic entity that predicts our future. Mehmet Salih Orgun is an educator and cultural advocate based in Alanya and the founding principal of Yaşam Tasarım Okulları. Committed to international education, he has led innovative programs since 2016 that integrate language learning and cultural exchange, introducing Japanese language courses, Aikido classes, and TEDx events, helping transform the school into a regional hub for Japanese–Turkish relations. In recognition of his contributions to promoting Japanese culture and cross-cultural understanding, Orgun has received prestigious honors from the Japanese Embassy in Turkey, including the Japan Ambassador Award. He continues to collaborate with JICA and the Turkish–Japanese Foundation to expand educational opportunities, student exchanges, and disaster-preparedness seminars, demonstrating how education can serve as a bridge between nations.
