In AI We (DIS)TRUST | Luana Lo Piccolo | TEDxWarwick Salon

Technology is often treated as neutral, but it never is. Through real cases, from a Dutch welfare algorithm that wrongly labelled thousands of families as fraudsters to a police AI that reported an officer had turned into a frog, this talk reveals how responsibility quietly gets designed out of AI. It makes the case that regulation alone isn't enough, and that accountability must be built into how organisations lead and decide, challenging us all to design responsibility back in. Specialising in Legal Tech, Al and Global Digital Governance, Luana advises governments, international institutions and businesses in designing Al governance strategies that move beyond regulatory compliance to foster ethical leadership, long-term resilience, and sustainable innovation. In recognition of her impact, Luana has been named: • Best Legal Strategist in Responsible Al & Regulatory Compliance by the Global Legal Association (2025) • Best Responsible Al Leader by the Responsible Al Institute (2024) With a strong background in digital policy, Luana has played an influential role in shaping major digital regulations, including the EU AI Act and the Digital Services Act, and is widely recognized for advancing tech accountability and responsible Al adoption. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
